Malcolm Gulley was woken up early Monday by an earthquake that shook parts of south Texas about 45 miles southeast of San Antonio.

The Kenedy resident said he didn't think it was an earthquake at the time.

“I thought it was some really heavy wind. It just lasted long enough to wake me up, three to four seconds, and I went back to sleep,” he said. “I didn’t hear a howling. I just felt the house reverberate some.”

No injuries were reported from the quake detected about 6 miles southwest of the Karnes County in an area near the line with Wilson County. “There’s no damage. Nothing,” an official at the Karnes County Sheriff Department said.

The U.S. Geological survey reported the epicenter of the 3.7 magnitude quake was at a depth of about 3.1 miles. The agency says a magnitude 4.0 earthquake typically can be felt as far as 60 miles from where it happened.

Dorthy Crabtree, an office manager for the Karnes County Attorney’s office said she was just getting ready for work when she heard the disturbance from her bedroom.

“I felt something. It sounded like something heavy hit the house,” she said.

Texas occasionally has earthquakes. In the Texas pandhandle, a minor earthquake was felt in Amarillo on March 30, 2002. The Amarillo area also recorded seven minor earthquakes in 2000.
